“Be kind to yourself.”
It’s my mother’s famous phrase.
Too often, I find myself busy—too busy. I have no off switch and often don’t know how to rest. I learned early in college to maximize every moment and leave no time wasted. There was always something to get done. And it worked then—college demanded that kind of hustle.
But now, at my age? Not so much.
There’s something to be said about rest, quiet, and simply doing nothing. So, when you find yourself challenged to get it all done—and your mind, spirit, soul, and body are tired, exhausted, and begging for stillness—be kind to yourself.
We’re growing older. As we age, we can’t keep behaving like we did in our twenties. We have to put respect on our age and realize:
We’re not superheroes.
Tomorrow is another day.
We don’t have to do it all, take care of it all, or carry the world on our backs every second.
The world won’t stop if you take a break.
So today, give yourself permission to pause.
Go for a walk. Get some fresh air. Take a nap. Breathe.
Stop going so hard.
Whatever has to get done, remember my mother’s words of wisdom:
Be kind to yourself!
With love,
Ke’Shawn
